On one of my regular visit to the hairdresser I read a magazine article
about cosmetic dental surgery at a time when I was thinking about getting
some work done. It advised going to a reputable practice, and one which
was a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Ten years away from a dentist chair and all the terror associated with it
were enough to make me think very carefully about whom I would let near my
mouth, so I did my research very thoroughly and finally settled on Helens
Bay Dental.
This practice ticked all the boxes friendly staff, a female dentist,
understanding of patients fears, and of course, members of the Association
The only problem seemed to be its location, 250 miles from my home in the
west of Ireland. However, as making the initial decision to have the work
done was 95% of the journey the physical location of the practice became
irrelevant. The actual journey from Galway to Belfast was done by early
train to Dublin, snoozing, followed by the early train to Belfast, reading,
then a most enjoyable 20 minutes on the Bangor train to Helens Bay,
sightseeing. The practice is 57 steps from the train station, which I
counted each visit as a form of relaxation before I opened the door, when I
was always greeted by a smiling Alexis with numerous cups of tea and the
latest magazines.
After the initial consultation with Sarah it turned out that the getting
some work done was not the simple job I had thought, but because of my
instant trust in the dentist, and lots of support from Alexis, Glenda, Jazz
and Beata, I knew there was no alternative to what was suggested, namely
several implants, a bridge, lots of fillings and a few new crowns.
The practice is extremely relaxed but wonderfully efficient. Everybody has
a very good and respectful relationship with each other. They are extremely
patient and understanding and give lots of short breaks in the chair when
the work is being done. The practice is extremely modern and the calming
classical music on the radio allows you to focus on it and not on any
activity in your mouth. There was never any sense that the work was being
rushed because another patient might be waiting, the whole focus was on you.
Everything was explained before work started at each appointment, with lots
of progress reports, which in themselves, were a form of relaxation, as
because of the nature of the work being done, the appointments were usually
2hours.
The work is finished, just regular check-ups and visits to an also very
pleasant hygienist. I am sure I gave a lot of grief to everybody in the
practice who were extremely tolerant of me and my fears, but between us all,
we made it and my mouth is now worth every euro of the investment in it. |
